Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay System for the First Time.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay technology

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay technology.

Replay systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Athletes will gain the ability to contest certain rulings from the official, following the practice already in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be operational on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This move comes just a year after the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which effectively ended the longstanding role of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors cannot to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the official to review other decisions, including:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball made contact with an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Potential interference end of a rally.

Importantly, there is no limit on the amount of challenges a player can initiate.

Practical Application

A recent example took place in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and ruled the player was guilty of interference, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

This technology aren't new for major tournaments. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews in place at all of its events.

Further Updates

Another change at Wimbledon this year will be the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where spectators have occasionally been unsure whether a shot was out or in.

In other news, with exactly 100 days remaining until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
