Trump's Regime of Consequences and Incentives

Donald Trump's intense appetite for revenge has quickly evolved into a methodical system. Over the year since his election, the chief executive's fury and whims have taken on the form of government actions in ways comparable to past authoritarian systems. Justice department officials who fail to comply are summarily dismissed and substituted by devotees. Political officials who question him risk legal action, court proceedings and penalties. Critics have been designated under administration orders as “anti-American”, “anti-Christian” and “anti-capitalist”, and menaced with prosecution as “security threats”.

Government Institutions Restructured

All situation involving prosecution of critics and leniency for his allies demonstrates its own distinct characteristics. But, notwithstanding their specific character, they embody examples of what has developed as a systematic method. Those events are far from random. Trump's purge of DoJ prosecutors and Federal Bureau of Investigation agents, coupled with his appointment of supporters in senior positions, began swiftly, soon assumed a consistency, and has now been shaped into a system. DoJ and the Federal Bureau have been remade into political agencies under the president's direct direction to implement his demands. Wrongdoing has been made routine. It constitutes the system of punishment.

Management is focused with targeting the leader's supposed opponents than they are with safeguarding our national security.

Inside the System

The foundation of this system has been uncovered in the court filing of three former top FBI officials filed in September in the US district court in the capital against FBI director Kash Patel and justice department head a key figure for wrongful dismissal in “a effort of payback against them for what Defendants considered to be a failure to demonstrate proper devotion”. In the complaint that one official, the ex- interim leader, details a discussion in which Patel “openly admitted the unlawfulness of his actions”.

The official had tried to defend agency personnel from being fired, the filing states. The director told him that “administration officials” – perceived by Driscoll to be the White House and justice department – had directed him to dismiss everyone who they determined as having worked on a law enforcement case against Trump. The document continues: “Patel clarified that he had to terminate the personnel his leaders told him to fire, because his ability to keep his own role depended on the removal of the agents who worked on cases involving the chief executive. He commented that there was no way he or the official could do to stop these or any other firings, because ‘the FBI sought to incarcerate the chief in jail and he hasn't forgotten it.’” When Driscoll told Patel he was disregarding the bureau's own internal rules, the director supposedly said “he knew that and he knew the nature of the swift terminations were probably improper”.

Extensive Consequences

Since his reported admission to him, the Department of Justice and the law enforcement agency have been dismantled and reorganized for the administration's system of punishment. Six of the FBI's top officials were dismissed or pushed out in the initial period of the government. Approximately 4,500 legal professionals at DoJ have accepted a “early exit scheme”. A minimum of multiple federal prosecutors, including those in the southern district of New York, quit in objection over what they considered as ideological pressure in dropping the legal action against the city leader, the mayor, in exchange for his cooperation with the administration's Immigration and Customs Enforcement detentions of immigrants. The public integrity section of DoJ, which manages misconduct investigations, has been reduced to two attorneys. The civil rights division has been severely reduced: the majority of its employees has left. 33% of top officials at the department have left. The section upholding conservation statutes has lost a majority its leadership.

Favors and Sanctions

In the legal matter, the temporary lawyer for the federal division, Danielle Sassoon, stepped down in objection against what she labeled as the “quid pro quo”. The border official, his “border czar,” showed up as the agent with the mayor on Fox News to state: “Unless he complies, I'll reappear in New York City.”. Additionally, a former official, earlier the justice department figure and a past legal representative, who arranged the arrangement, was granted an court role, a potential springboard to the highest court.

Trump's protection for offenses committed while in government, granted by the extraordinary ruling of the conservative on the supreme court, thus preventing his legal action over the political violence and safeguarding his electoral prospects for the national vote, is the foundation stone on which he stands to protect his supporters. Given this protection, he has been liberated to permit misconduct. The consequence of the court judgment infuses his government and the political party thoroughly. The court matter has spread. In the words of Richard Nixon's White House counsel John Dean remarked about the Watergate
