Our team is checking video footage and photographs circulated earlier today that purport to show the scene of a alleged car bomb blast that authorities in Russia state killed a senior soldier in Moscow.
Officials in Russia stated that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was inside the car that exploded and that he later died to his injuries. A probe is under way.
The initial step to check the site of where the images originated relied on social media reports indicating the explosion happened on Yasenevaya Street in the southern part of the capital city of Russia.
Our analysis employed street-view imagery on Google Maps and the Russian search engine Yandex Maps to corroborate the unique yellow colour of a nearby apartment building captured in the video.
Locating additional buildings, streetlights and the street layout confirmed the exact location the pictures were captured.
We also checked that the video clips were new and that the visuals had not undergone digital alteration.
