The EU might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States on five Europeans involved in combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures that were at the heart of efforts to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the move.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
