A deadly train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The accident occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a line constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify what caused this incident,” stated the national leader.
The president confirmed that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The official stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
Key Undertaking of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the former leader, whose time in office finished the previous year. This project was a hallmark of his administration's economic vision for the southern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The development of both train projects was supervised by the army, marking a dramatic increase of its responsibilities in public projects. They were built at an accelerated speed, surpassing expectations to be partially launched before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously sparked ongoing concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an prior accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the disaster, the leader of a primary political opposition urged an urgent pause in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.
This stoppage was requested while awaiting a full technical review. The party stated that the tragedy "calls for prompt explanations."
In reply, the national leader maintained that the train had been running in full compliance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the construction and running of these national undertakings.
